SOCAL: Well, here's a nice counterpoint to Reyner Banham and his "I learned to drive in order to read Los Angeles in the original." Transit planner Nathan Landau has written Car-Free Los Angeles and Southern California, which, according to publisher Wilderness Press, "is designed as a complete guide to a car-free vacation in Southern California, from the time travelers land or arrive until the time they leave." (Of course we imagine it'll also work just fine for locals.) The book includes tips on transit accessible lodging and on getting around and to central LA, the Westside, Pasadena, the OC, Catalina, San Diego, and Santa Barbara. Get it here. [Curbed Inbox]

GRIFFITH PARK/GLENDALE: Ground broke today on a new bridle trail and irrigation project in Bette Davis Park on the north side of Griffith. The trail is set to meet up with the under-construction Glendale Narrows Riverwalk, which includes park areas and bike, pedestrian, and equestrian trails along the river. The Burbank Leader reports that LA and Glendale officials expect both projects to be finished sometime in 2012. [Curbed Inbox/Burbank Leader]
