The rumors are flying in Echo Park about the source of a mysterious bass noise that oontz, oontz, oontzed through the neighborhood all weekend. Echo Park Now details the duration of the sound ("not just one, but TWO nights through 2:00 am") and wonders if Echo Park has been stricken by its own particular variety of no-fun NIMBYs, because things got testy late at night on the Echo Elysian Neighborhood Councils Forum (Where discussion threads began in 2001, by the way--that's like the Stone Age in internet years. Another example of how hip Echo Park is.). One presumably Baby Boomer poster wrote this about the weekend's festivities: "In the 40 years I've lived here, I have never seen such a disrespect for neighbors. This is unconscionable and ugly." Another poster added a little perspective: "Well, on the glass-half-full side of things, I guess I admit I prefer the dance thump to the sound of gunshots."
No one was quite sure where the sounds were coming from, though possible culprits included the Shrine Expo at USC, the music venues and art spaces that line Sunset in the neighborhood, or specific houses (the addresses of which some forum posters listed). The LAPD, for their part, were flooded with calls but received no actual hard leads.
