On Friday, the US Department of Transportation announced it was releasing $21 million for the start of double-tracking work on trains running through San Diego County, which should lead to quicker Amtrak and Metrolink service on trips from, to, and through LA. "Amtrak and Metrolink trains must often grind to [a] halt on their way in and out of San Diego while they wait for another train to pass," Neon Tommy reports. The Source's Steve Hymon sees the double-tracking news as evidence that, should high-speed rail die (more on that soon), smaller fixes could still lead to more efficient intercity train service in California.
