The Atlantic takes a look at the diminishing number of Chinese people coming to the US and the increasing number of former immigrants heading back home, and the effect on the Chinatown neighborhoods in American cities: "Because Chinatowns are where working-class immigrants have traditionally gathered for support, the rise of China--and the slowing of immigrant flows--all but ensures the end of Chinatowns." LA's Chinatown (actually a version 2.0 of the original enclave and formerly doing business as Little Italy) has new residential projects (e.g., Blossom Plaza, Chinatown Gateway) in the pipeline, so maybe we'll prove an exception.
