DOWNTOWN: The United Methodist Church will be staying in its home at El Pueblo following years of haggling with the city and the El Pueblo Board of Commissioners over the lease (plus some extreme actions by the El Pueblo board). City Councilmember Jose Huizar announced a tentative deal in August and on Friday the City Council approved the agreement and it officially went into effect. According to a press release from Huizar's office: "The agreement successfully addresses separation of church and state concerns raised by the City Attorney’s Office, sets a reasonable monthly rent, creates a plan for a museum, and increases the City’s lease offer from five years to 15, with an option to extend another 15." The church's last lease, which ran 50 years and cost them $1 per year, ran out in 2006. [Curbed Inbox, image via Jose Huizar's Blog]
