Here's your big chance to beat the Santa Monica traffic and start biking to work--the Santa Monica Bike Center has literally just opened (ribbon cutting was at 10 am) and it's being "billed as the largest bike parking facility in the country," according to County Supe Zev Yaroslavsky's website. The Center actually has two locations--a main facility on Second St. near Colorado (adjacent to a future Expo Line stop!) and a satellite at Fourth St. and Broadway. They have a combined 5,300 square feet of space and 360 secure bike parking spaces, according to The Source.
Both locations offer secure bike parking, bike repairs, and restrooms. The main location also has showers and lockers, bike rentals, bike education tools, "bicycle commuter retail products," bike and Segway sharing, guided bike and Segway tours, and a bike valet. Monthly membership starts at $15; annual starts at $99 and they both include 24/7 access and various discounts. Locker and towel service will run a little more. The Center is holding open houses today and through the weekend.
