Work Has Finally Started on the Columbia Savings-Killing Wilshire/La Brea Apartments

New, 32 comments

Something's being built! And it's not just being built, it's being built on the southeast corner of Wilshire and La Brea, which has been a huge dirt lot since developer BRE hastily demolished the old Columbia Savings Bank building in late 2009! Despite having no immediate plans to build, BRE took the former bank out the second it had approvals from the city, since preservationists had a hearing scheduled to get the building named to the California Register of Historical Resources. Color us surprised--BRE had most recently been promising a late 2011 groundbreaking and we were sure it'd get pushed back a few more times; dirt started flying last week. The project will be six stories tall and have 482 apartments and 40,000 square feet of retail.
