A Condo 35 Stories Underground

New, 6 comments

Making the internet rounds is a Humans Invent article about a plan by BNKR Arquitectura to build a 30+ story "Earthscraper" (meaning it'll penetrate the earth rather than tickling the sky) in Mexico City. The benefits to such a structure would include lower heating/cooling costs--and, we guess, novelty--but getting sunlight to the lower floors would be a challenge (a planned glass top would help, as well as provide views of the giant pit). Other problems that'll need solving: humidity, ventilation, construction. Some rudimentary examples of underground living already exist--there's a five room house underground in South Korea and Manchester, England will soon have a two story underground house.
