A major expansion of the Chabad center on Chandler Blvd. is creating rifts in a leafy, residential section of Sherman Oaks, reports the Daily News. Approved--some would say erroneously--back in 2009, the plans call for the existing 1,400 square foot center to be demolished for a 12,000 square foot facility that will include a synagogue and Hebrew school. Work has already started, but an opposition group claiming that the new center is too big and doesn't have enough parking is trying to halt work--they have a recent court decision on their side that requires the City Council to reconsider the project. Chabad supporters say they don't need parking because the Orthodox congregants walk to the center. [Daily News, image via]
