Salon visits Slab City, the depressing "apocalyptic squattersville" out on 640 acres near the Salton Sea. The "town" was once a Marine training base; after decommission, snowbirds and the extremely poor began camping out on the concrete slab foundations of its old barracks. Slab City was featured in the book and movie of Into the Wild, which combined with the new normal economy has driven its year-round population from 75-100 up to about 200. Slab City has no electricity, sewage, or running water. [Salon, image via]
