The Web Urbanist, via Good, highlights some innovative new designs for traffic lights, a ubiquitous city feature that hasn't evolved that much in decades. Pictured is the shifting-sand light, which doesn't leave much room for guessing when it comes to blowing through a yellow. Though that one is pretty, it doesn't offer much assistance to the color-blind--some of the new traffic light designs address that problem by having different colors coordinate with different shapes.
