Overhead Power Lines in Santa Monica's Sunset Park Going Off the Grid

New, 17 comments

Prepare for more unobstructed views of the Westside sky—the Santa Monica Daily Press reports that a project to remove overhead power lines and place them underground in the Sunset Park area around Pico Boulevard and 20th Street has begun. The $8 million effort is being paid for by a Southern California Edison program, will take six months to finish, and was first pushed by local resident Tom Stringer back in the late ‘90s. The work, covering a four-block area, will not remove all the power lines in the vicinity—the remainder should be buried in a second phase planned for 2013. Not far from this undergrounding is the proposed Scattergood-Olympic Transmission Line project, which intends to add 12-miles of underground power cables from El Segundo to West LA. The effort was sidetracked a bit when it was decided last year that the plan needed a completed environmental impact report to go forward.
