The transit agency has retired their last diesel bus today and is now operating 2,221 compressed natural gas buses, one electric, and six gas/electric hybrid vehicles, according to The Source. The conversion from diesel to cleaner-burning vehicles began in earnest in 1993, when Metro began only buying clean-running buses. Diesel buses are cheaper to purchase, but Metro says the cleaner vehicles are a cost-saver in the end because they're more fuel-efficient--they also prevent 300,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being emitted per day.
