Radical Craft's Soms Atoll Only All There Some of the Time

New, 2 comments

Downtown-based design studio Radical Craft won third place in the World Sustainability Centre competition for their Soms Atoll (Sometimes Atoll). The project site is Afsluitdijk, a 20 mile dike on Holland's north coast that holds freshwater on one side and saltwater on the other. Radical Craft's proposal "reorganizes existing tidal flats to propose an understanding of sustainability as alignment with natural cycles rather than mastery over nature through technology." That means sometimes visitors will see tidal pools, sometimes a lagoon, and "Visitors may arrive to find they need to wait two hours in anticipation for that perfect island to appear."
