SM's city council punted a decision on upping fares for the BBB until May 11, reports the Santa Monica Daily Press. If the city approves the new fares, which would buffer the bus system's deficit, they could take effect in late August; if a firm decision isn't made in May, fares wouldn't rise from 75 cents to $1.25 until the winter. The city wants to explore reduced service, new revenue streams, and giving the system more money--the BBB still doesn't carry as many riders as in 2002, the last time fares went up.
