Two Los Angeles City Council committees voted this week to shift responsibility for sidewalk repairs from the city to homeowners, who previously had the job from 1911 to 1974. According to the Beverly Press, the repairs already needed will cost $1.2 billion, and on top of that the city "spends between $3 million and $5 million each year defending lawsuits brought by people who trip and fall on city sidewalks."
