Behold the original statue that graced Wilshire Boulevard--right at the entryway of the old Ambassador Hotel--back in the 1930s. You can thank reader, historian and author Chris Nichols for posting a photo of the statue in comments. According to sculptor Bobbie Carlyle, who re-created the sculpture for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), this sexy statue has disappeared. "Very probably the sculpture went missing because of metal failure of the rusted iron support inside the bronze," Carlyle writes in an email. She used photos to re- create this new sculpture, but says she opted to make a clothed version given the proximity of the under-construction high school rising on the former site of the hotel. Puritanical or practical, the clothing? This new lady, attached to the original pylon from the hotel, is all part of the new pocket park that'll be finished this month.
