The mysterious street artist rumor mill has it that top mysterious street artist Banksy is in Los Angeles for the release of his new movie, Exit Through the Gift Shop, and he's celebrating by making some mysterious street art. The above apparent jab at Jeff Koons, whose work on the exact opposite side of the commercialist spectrum is all over LACMA's Broad Contemporary Art Museum, has just shown up on La Brea, and after the jump, a new piece on Broadway downtown. UPDATE: Let the theorizing begin! Via Hyperallergic: "There’s a Koons quote: “Abstraction and luxury are the guard dogs of the upper class.” So Banksy is accusing Koons’ work of being in the same category of unintelligible, abstract, and ludicrously expensive art. That’s as far as I am conceptually on this, haha."
