Over the weekend, an anonymous email hit the InBox, the essence of which was: "Moby has purchased Wolf's Lair." While you digest that tidbit, recall that current owners Debbie Matenopoulos and Jay Faires (who are divorcing) have been trying to unload the Norman castle, with its John Lautner guest house and monkey turret, since 2008, when they listed it for $7.5 million. Since then it's been doing the increasingly common on the market, off the market, chop chop chop dance, but now it is officially under contract. Our emailer says Moby purchased the estate for $3.9 million. But we're guessing the same emailer also tossed the rumor to Your Mama over at Real Estalker, because she's got the story up this afternoon, and says she's confirmed the gossip (but then again, escrow hasn't closed yet). And as Your Mama points out, Moby does have a history of plunking down cash for big purchases, but Wolf's Lair seems like an "odd choice for a dedicated denizen of the downtown [NY] scene." The house's most recent asking was $4.295 million.
