UC-San Diego Frat Kids Make Asses of Themselves

New, 67 comments

Uh, nice one, frat boys. UCSD's Greek community recently threw a "Compton Cookout" in honor of February being Black History Month. The cookout encouraged students to dress like "ghetto chicks" and wear XXXL t-shirts, to drink 40s and "dat Purple drank." Karen Bass and John Perez, two LA members of the state assembly, along with Isadore Hall, the assistant speaker pro tempore from Compton, are furious, especially since UCSD is a public university. “Today, I call upon UC San Diego Chancellor Mary Anne Fox, UC President Mark Yudof and the UC Board of Regents to launch an immediate and thorough investigation of the ‘Compton Cookout’ event to determine the names of those responsible for planning and participating in this act of racism and sexism," Hall said in a press release. Hall wants names, of both individuals and organizations, who funded and condoned the event and to know if public money was spent on the party. Marisa Lago, columnist for SFGate wonders why the politicians chose to publicize the invite, "further publicizing the comments, which seems a bit counter productive....That said, fraternities do offensive stuff all the time -- and this latest flap seems perfectly legal, albeit insensitive and racist, so we're not sure where state legislators fit in. But hey, why not jump on a story that's got legs?"
