Room 59 at the Chateau Marmont Stars in Coppola's Somewhere

New, 7 comments

For her new movie Somewhere, Sofia Coppola follows film portraits of the midwestern suburbs (The Virgin Suicides), Tokyo (Lost in Translation), and Versailles (Marie Antoinette), with a trip to the Chateau Marmont. At her diary site for the movie, she writes "I loved movies like Shampoo and American Gigolo that captured Los Angeles, and wanted to try to do that for this time." According to Los Angeles, she was "the first filmmaker allowed complete access to the Chateau’s leafy grounds and palatial French architecture. The fifth floor was rented and partitioned off like a tiny studio, with room 59 serving as Johnny Marco’s pad." (The movie, by the way, includes a cameo by Benicio Del Toro--he meets main character Stephen Dorff in the Chateau's elevator--which we can't help finding juicy, considering the rumor that Del Toro and Lost in Translation star Scarlett Johansson had sex in one of those elevators after the 2004 Oscars.)
