From Los Angeles A to Z via LAhistory on Twitter: "Edward L. Doheny discovered oil on 4 November 1892 at 2nd Street and Glendale Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles. His find set off a boom that lasted years. By 1897 the city had 500 derricks, and in 1910 the area near Santa Monica Boulevard and Vermont Avenue was an unruly oil shantytown." LAhistory has links to oil field maps of the city, then and now. [Google Books/Twitter]
