Santa Monica's city council has gone ahead and slashed the amount of licensed cabs in their city from over 500 to 300, reports the Santa Monica Daily Press. The deal--intended to reduce congestion and idling taxis, increase living wages for drivers, and reward local companies that use low-emission vehicles--also sets a limit on franchises that can pick up passengers in Santa Monica to five (60 cabs for each company). The new plan has to be finalized in another council meeting and will likely go into effect in Jan. 2011 after companies have time to buy more hybrids. [SMDP]
