How do you make a hundred year old mortarless stone church earthquake safe? Hold a chili cook-off! The Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Covina, designed in 1910 by Arthur Benton; built out of stones from the San Gabriel River; and listed in An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles, has to be retrofitted under a recent city ordinance. Church officials are trying to raise money to cover things like permits and consultants. [SGVT]
