Hollywood's Gower and Fountain Project: Once More, With Feeling

New, 4 comments

Woo-hee, more exciting drama at the long-suffering corner of Fountain Ave and Gower St. In December, the city's Planning Department approved plans for a Howard Laks Architects-designed condo building (seen above), a project that grew bigger--from 12 condos to 22 condos--after the developer asked for a density bonus last fall. Well, although the Planning Department approved the project, they forget to send letters notifying the local neighborhood council and residents of their decision. Without notification of the development's approval---and the project would rise on a lot that once held a cottage and rental building--residents missed the appeal period. "It was a fluke," says City Planner Jim Tokunaga of the mistake. New letters will be mailed next week and the appeal period will be re-opened. Edward Hunt, chairman of the Planning and Land Use Committee of the Hollywood Studio District Neighborhood Council, says he can't guess if anyone will appeal, but did say: "I personally think a six-story entitlement next to one-story bungalows is a little excessive." A rep for Laks says the project is five stories. Meanwhile, we're starting to think this corner is just cursed.
