That Was Quick: Downtown Movie Theater Takes First Victim

New, 13 comments

Even before the October 27 opening of the 14-screen Regal Cinemas, the new LA Live theater has mowed down its competition. Blogdowntown reports that Downtown's only other mainstream movie theater, the Laemmle Grande 4-Plex on Figueroa, will soon wave the white flag in anticipation of Regal's opening. "Citing impending competition, the Laemmle Grande 4-Plex will close its doors on October 25, two days before the opening of the Regal Cinemas Stadium 14." There was discussion of returning the 4-Plex to its indie roots, but the only way the theater made any money was showing mainstream movies. The less-than-spotless 4-Plex remained a much-loved city secret and was often near empty. Downtown cinephiles still have (for now) the hyper-indie, one-screen Downtown Independent on Main, formerly known as the Pacific Rim-specialty ImaginAsian theater.
