Even though they are far, far safer than traffic intersections, and cause cars to waste less energy ("Accelerating from a dead stop is the least efficient thing a car's engine can do"), roundabouts still freak out Americans, according to Slate's Tom Vanderbilt (author of "Traffic"), who ties fear of the traffic-calmers to a form of transportation xenophobia. Basically, every American had a bad experience in Europe with a roundabout. [Slate]
