Buried at the end of this USA Today story about the status of Terranea Resort, that Rancho Palos Verdes resort that asked the city for an $8 million bailout help cover operating expenses, is this rather incredible news tidbit. Via the paper: "As soon as Terranea asked for financial help, the mayor got a phone call from another developer. It was Donald Trump, who built what he calls the world's most expensive golf course near Terranea. 'Trump said he wants the same deal or he'll add this complaint to a $100 million lawsuit he has against us,' says [Larry] Clark, the mayor. Trump sued the city in December over planning rules that govern his 580-acre oceanfront development. 'We want equal treatment,' says Scott Wellman, Trump's lawyer. 'It's fundamental fairness.'" Ballsy! Who knows if it's just a publicity stunt, but as the story notes, Trump filed a $100 million lawsuit against the city last year. The suit is the latest in a very long series of legal battles between Trump and the city (the latest suit has to do with the construction of 20 homes and amenities at Trump National Golf Club).
