Gehry's Brooklyn Arena Design Replaced

New, 5 comments

It's official. As expected, architect Frank Gehry is out as the designer of Forest City Ratner Co's arena in Atlantic Yards. The long-delayed, controversial project had a $1 billion sports arena as its centerpiece. Gehry's design has been replaced by Kansas City, Mo.-based Ellerbe Becket's less expensive $800 million plan. According to the NY Times, the new design "resembles Conseco Fieldhouse, it also bears a likeness to an 'airplane hangar.'" Despite the switcheroo, Gehry is still the master planner for the development, which includes not just the arena, but 6,400 apartments (40% for low and middle-income residents) and an office tower.
