Freeway pollution is even more hazardous to your health than previously believed, according to a new study from UCLA, USC, and the California Air Resources Board. Using the 10 in Santa Monica as their model, the study researchers found that air pollution from the freeway travels as far as 2,500 meters—more than 1.5 miles—downwind, a distance 10 times greater than previously measured. Strangely enough, the study also found that pollution is worse during pre-sunrise hours and winter months, which certainly goes against conventional wisdom. [UCLA Newsroom]
