One of architect Rudolph Schindler's earliest and lesser known works, the Purviance Residence on Maltman in Silver Lake has a unit available for rent. The triplex's recent history has been a struggle to get the property declared a Historic-Cultural Monument. Its first application was rejected by the Cultural Heritage Commission in November 2005, and was threatened with demolition and a proposed condo project. Enter city council president Eric Garcetti, who responded to requests from local preservationists and made his first personal appearance before the Committee in four and a half years in 2006 to plead for monument status for the house. The house received Historic-Cultural Monument status in June 2006, and it seems the owner has backed off on condo development plans for now. Today one of the upper units is available and features wood floors, a newer stove and fridge, and one garage space. Cats are ok, but dog owners are out of luck. The one bedroom unit is available for "$1450 Rent plus $1450 Security Deposit plus $25 application fee."
