The Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York announced the winners and finalists in its 10th Annual National Design Awards program and while the list leans heavily east coast, LA is represented by Michael Maltzan. Maltzan is a finalist in the Architecture Design category. The museum's web site notes: "Through a focused belief in architecture’s role in the contemporary city, [Maltzan's] projects create new connections and catalyze change in a range of programs and contexts from single family residences to office towers, from institutions including MoMA and JPL to Skid Row. These designs emerge from their individual context—the city, geography and ideas, equally. They likewise engage their environment through deep, ongoing collaboration across disciplines to integrate sustainability and form. Finally, these designs reinvigorate the Modernist project of abstraction, creating complexity through the overlay of light, material, and movement to produce unprecedented detail, form, and beauty." Maltzan most recently topped off the New Carver apartments, a 95-unit supportive housing project for the homeless. [Images courtesy of Michael Maltzan Architecture] [Cooper-Hewitt]
