Calling Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's record on urban planning and mass transit a "major disappointment," LA Times architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne calls on the Mayor to make transit a priority in this second term. On Hawthorne's list for the Mayor: "Show real leadership on mass transit "; aka take a more active role in divvying up Measure R funds (if there are any funds left at this point); "Expand the City's Urban Design Studio," (that's the group that is creating design guidelines for downtown, but it should be more active and have a higher profile in the city, believes Hawthorne; and "Produce a plan for dealing with abandoned and vacant property" ie, the downtown's empty lots could "hold temporary structures by talented architects."
