A press release from Metro notes the agency will be moving forward on buying 41 compressed natural gas powered buses to be used on the county's soon-to-come toll lanes. Utilizing a $210 million federal grant given to LA (and originally intended for New York), the buses will be used on the new "ExpressLanes" project. Beginning as a one-year trial program in December 2010, the ExpressLanes will convert existing HOV lanes on the 10 and 110 freeways into toll lanes where solo drivers will be allowed to use for an as-of-yet undisclosed fee (carpoolers will still have free access). Other local transit agencies are buying up another 14 clean buses for use on the new toll lanes; Burbank recently made news for purchasing hydrogen buses for use in that city. In other Metro news, in an effort to prepare pedestrians and drivers for this summer's opening of the Gold Line Eastside Extension, the agency is deploying 12 rail safety ambassadors on Monday to seven Eastside intersections.
