ECHO PARK: Machine Project, an art space on Alvardo in Echo Park, has been transformed into a forest. Not sure how they did it, but it involved "forest builders." Impressive. There's an opening tonight. An from the web site: "A regular schedule of woodland themed lectures, readings and performances will take place in Machine Project throughout the month, staged inside the forest. Sara, Christy, and the entire Machine Project staff would like to thank all the volunteer forest builders. Thank you volunteers! This project was funded in part by an ARC grant from the Durfee Foundation. Thank you Durfee Foundation!" [Curbed InBox]
MAUI: Why not, it's Friday? One of the stranger press release to come across the InBox and an idea that could make for a good stocking stuffer: "OwnMaui.com is now selling a beautiful land holding on the island of Maui and they are selling it one square foot at a time. Anyone who buys a one square foot parcel gets an artistically designed deed by Cynthia Conrad, prominent Maui artist, which would give legal title to all Grantees. This legal deed is a fun novelty gift or award which is suitable for many occasions." [Curbed InBox]
HAWAIIAN REAL ESTATE FOR ONLY $9.99? IT'S POSSIBLE AT OWNMAUI.COM
OwnMaui.com (www.ownmaui.com) is now selling a beautiful land holding on the island of Maui and they are selling it one square foot at a time.
Real estate broker Froyam Edel, following a vision in which he saw a mythical Menehune, decided to apportion his property into one square foot parcels and sell deeds to each piece. That way many could both fulfill the dream of owning a piece of the Island and have a hand in its conservation.
Anyone who buys a one square foot parcel gets an artistically designed deed by Cynthia Conrad (http://coloriginalsmaui.com/index.html), prominent Maui artist, which would give legal title to all Grantees. This legal deed is a fun novelty gift or award which is suitable for many occasions.
Edel's vision of the mythical Menehune
Menehune (pronounced Meh-neh-HOO-neh) are legendary inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands. They work at night on projects, but only complete what can be done on that night.
Froyam believed he was under divine guidance when he initially purchased the land. Once cleared of jungle weeds, invasive plants and junk, the vista presented a view of a gorgeous waterfall, hidden from neighbors for over 20 years. Although the beautiful coastal property should have sold quickly, the sudden downturn of the real estate market meant buyers were few.
Edel was stumped until his vision showed him the way.
"Seeing this female Menehune was my epiphany. Her message was clear. Sell this land in Menehune size pieces. Allow people to become stewards of the land and keep it pristine," remarks Edel. "Nothing could have been clearer, more honest or more heartfelt." The land is now for sale by the square foot, each piece starting at $9.99 up to $36.99. "My plan means many owners will always feel a special connection to this 'aina' (land) to always hold in their hearts as a sacred place."
Edel's property is situated on Maui's scenic Hana coast and backed by taro fields. Poi, an iconic Hawaiian dish, is made from taro. It is here that most Maui taro, the starchy staple of Hawaiian cuisine, is grown. The water in which taro grows is being diverted for development by big business.
"Who would have ever imagined the possibility that land ownership on Maui could be free and clear of any obligations," said Edel. "It was divine guidance that led me to purchase the land in the first place. It was the magic of the Menehune that showed me the way to sell it."
