As they had said they would likely do, downtown developer/landlord Meruelo Maddux Properties began filing for Chapter 11 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court Central District Of California today. In legal jargon, this is what's called "commencing the filing of bankruptcy petitions." This is the first filing, and more documents will be filed in the next couple of hours. A press release is expected to be issued shortly. You can see the filing here. And the case number is 1:09-bk-13338. For now, it seems that Meruelo Maddux's 717 Ninth project, that 35-story green-hued apartment complex, is safe, however. More about the bankruptcy from a previous post.
