That's the sentiment of the Downtown News, which just published an editorial on the matter. The newspaper's editors believe it's an inexcusable that the funicular has been closed more than eight years since the fatal accident that shut it down, and that local businesses are suffering from the protracted reopening. They commend the volunteers of the Angels Flight Railway Foundation who have raised millions to get the two railcars back on the tracks, and install a new drive system, but say their broken promises on opening dates have finally necessitated action by local government, possibly the MTA: "It is time for a public-private partnership, even if the private side in this case resists." The railway does seem closer than ever to opening, but could bureaucrats finally get the ribbon cut? [Downtown News]
