What to do about the Westside's homeless situation? While Venice considers creating special parking zones for those who sleep in their vehicles, the Santa Monica city council is looking to turn part of a city-owned, beachside property into affordable housing, reports the Santa Monica Daily Press. In a deal expected to be approved tonight, the city will lease seven units of a 19-unit mixed-use structure on Ocean Avenue to a local homeless service provider, who will rent out the space as affordable housing for the underprivileged (as the Daily Press puts it, "the views of the ocean for the homeless are about to get more comfortable"). SM city councilman Bobby Shriver (JFK's nephew) has made supportive housing a big part of his tenure, so we're sure he's happy about this move. [SMDP]
