NPR's All Things Considered sent a lucky reporter to check out the superfancy Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, which is targeted primarily at richies within driving distance. Even though it opened in fall 2008, business is great, there haven't been any discounts on the $700 and up rooms, and the gelato flavors still change up daily. One big advantage for Pelican Hill is that it's owned by the Irvine Company, which has owned the land it's on for years. [All Things Considered]
