NIMBYs, Meet Bananas

The Los Angeles Times runs the Financial Times' review of a new book called Nimby Wars: The Politics of Land Use. The book uses Tesco's invasion into the LA-area as an example of NIMBY warfare: a distribution center was fought by locals, ostensibly over concerns about the owl population, but the book's authors say that was a smokescreen to hide the motives of unions and local grocery stores. Nimby Wars claims the NIMBY (not in my backyard) complex has turned into the BANANA complex (build absolutely nothing anywhere near anything). Quite possibly, but the authors of Nimby Wars run a company devoted to winning land-use battles for corporations, so they're not the most unbiased source. [LA Times]
