Kent Mackenzie's 1961 film The Exiles follows one night in the lives of American Indians in Bunker Hill--Mackenzie's friends playing themselves in scenes out of their own lives. It only got its first theatrical release last year (the film's website says Thom Andersen's documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself "kicked off the rediscovery" of the movie), and came out on DVD yesterday. The set includes Mackenzie's 1964 USC master's thesis about producing the film. [New Yorker]
