Good news for dapper Bar Mitzvah boys. The Sportsmen's Lodge events center reopened last week after a ten-month makeover that returned the space to its classier roots. The events center and the Sportsmen's Lodge hotel were bought by Weintraub Financial Services back in 2007, and the hotel got an update last year.
The Sportsmen's Lodge grew up with the Valley--the original events center was built in the 1880s along a dirt Ventura Boulevard, and Weintraub COO Louis Heilbron tells us he remembers trout fishing there as a kid (the restaurant would cook up the fish for you). After several years in western decor purgatory (see "before" photos above), Weintraub's goal was to return the space to its fifties glamour, when John Wayne and Clark Gable would stop in from nearby studios. The updated center will host tradeshows, proms, and parties as usual, but rep Fiona Hutton tells Curbed they're also putting renewed focus on attracting business events.
As for that retail and restaurant project that Richard Weintraub promised us back in 2007, Hutton says it's still coming. The new space will be built adjacent to the events center. Weintraub is also behind the Malibu Lumber Yards and the Vibiana venue in the old Cathedral of St. Vibiana downtown.
