Eucalyptus=The New Ficus

New, 26 comments

Following last year's war on ficus trees, comes word of the movement to chop down local eucalyptus trees, which are native to Australia. Rehashing the decision to removes 3,000 trees on the Arroyo Pescadero trail, the Pasadena Star-News writes: "It's only really in our time that the dark side of eucalyptus has been recognized. They are not only major water-suckers in our dry climate - they are known to firefighters as virtual bombs when the sparks are flying. The oils that fill their trunks and leaves are so flammable that there are reports from Australia of trees seemingly exploding on their own." [PSN]
