That's Rather Hideous: Dream House for the Manchild In Your Life

New, 22 comments

There seem to be two prominent styles that pay homage to the 80s design. The first is clearly inspired by the Bret Easton Ellises of the world, and take the form of uber-minimalist, starkly white interiors. We've already mocked that incarnation. The other, perhaps more disturbing, is found in this home.

Rather than go the high design route, this owner has chosen to relive the 80s in all its gaudy, brightly colored, Pacman-playing glory. It's the structural equivalent of Cyndi Lauper. This six-bedroom, five bath, 4,200 square foot home features a "2 story guest house, pool & spa with waterfalls surrounded by lush landscaping. Screening room w/ 130" screen, pool table, poker table, pinball machines, Yamaha grand piano, PAC MAN, touch screen games at the bar, plasma screens throughout, fireplace, Wolf Range, Sub-Zero, state of the art security system." What, no sit-down Ms. Pacman? No thanks. It's clearly the dream home of an emotionally stunted but financially endowed manchild. Or a reality TV show. And just like a reality TV show, the price seems divorced from any semblance of "reality." Its last sale price, in December 2002 was $925,000. Today's asking price: $2.393 million or $570 per square foot.
