Broad's Beverly Hills Museum: Shortlist Revealed

New, 12 comments

Since Eli Broad announced plans to build a museum in Beverly Hills to permanently house his extensive art collection, we've wondered who would he deign to design it for him? Broad and architect Frank Gehry have a history of collaborating (mostly notably on the Grand Ave project), but for the museum, Gehry is stepping into an advisory role. The Architect's Newspaper has revealed the five architects shortlist for the museum commission: Thom Mayne, Jean Nouvel, Shigeru Ban, Rafael Viñoly, and Christian de Portzamparc. According to the paper, the architects will present schemes in mid-February to an advisory panel that includes not only Gehry but also "critic Joseph Giovannini, Joanne Heyler (Director/Chief Curator for the Broad Foundation), and Marcy Goodwin (museum planning consultant)." Will Mayne have a home court advantage? Will LA finally get a Nouvel building after the demise of his Century City project? Will LA go from no Christian de Portzamparc buildings to two museums by him in a few years, as he builds the Academy Museum in Hollywood? We can't wait to see the renderings.
