AIA Home Tour: Kelly Residence in Brentwood

New, 13 comments

On Sunday we had the pleasure of taking the AIA/LA's architecture tour in Brentwood and the Palisades. First up, the Abramson Teiger Architect's Kelly Residence. The house is divided into four "boxes" yet each has a missing side "which is replaced by high-density wood panels coated with phenolic resin which are extruded upward from the first floor." The house feels expansive, the bedrooms seem to float from the second floor above the backyard, and the pool was killer, as is the pool house constructed from shipping containers. Our major quibble was the astroturf covering the front yard. If the owners want to save water and need a low cost alternative (the backyard is grass and pretty ginormous), surely they could have found interesting desert landscaping as a substitute.
