Downtown's Streetcars Could Arrive Sooner Than Expected

New, 29 comments

There's a new push to get Downtown's streetcar system going, writes the Downtown News' Anna Scott, noting the zippy car system could arrive in "two years" rather than 10 years or even 3-4 years (what we reported in May). City officials and leaders approved the formation of L.A. Streetcar, a non-profit organization modeled after Portland, Oregon's non-profit organization Portland Streetcar Inc.; it's expected that the new non-profit will not only handle the design and operational capabilities of the system, but draw private donations to help pay for the three-mile system. Estimated to cost $60 million-$90 million, the streetcar system would be paid for via a private-public partnership. [Photo of Portland streetcar via Downtown Trolley]
