God bless Santa Monica, they love themselves some great-looking garages. Following last year's opening of that colorful Santa Monica Civic Center parking garage (at the corner of Fourth Street and Olympic Drive), comes this news: Yesterday, the architectural review board of the city approved designs by local architecture firm Pugh + Scarpa for two existing garages off the new Santa Monica Place, that under-construction shopping mall. Flanking the 3rd Street Promenade on Broadway and Colorado, the two garages are getting new facades, solar panels, space for retail stores, and a public art component (artist Anne- Marie Karlsen is doing that Ferris Wheel-inspired design pictured above; Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues are doing the ball designs). The garages were completed in 1980 to coincide with the opening of the now dead Frank Gehry-designed Santa Monica Place; in addition to this contract with mall developer Macerich, Pugh+ Scarpa has a contract with the city to overhaul six more public garages around the Third Street Promenade.
