Hermosa Beach neighborhood activists are fighting a proposed plan to bring wider sidewalks and mixed-use buildings to Pier Avenue, citing the area's current quaintness. "[Pier Avenue chiropractor Ed Connaughton] praised the “relatively uncongested, downscale” feel of the avenue and said its quaint, small-town atmosphere might be replaced with the larger, more sparkly look of the nearby Pier Plaza promenade."
