The Galaxy Towers condominium in Long Beach still doesn't have sprinklers. The 20-story complex saw another fire Saturday, following a 2007 blaze that claimed one life (no one was injured in this recent fire, a smaller kitchen fire). "Following last year's blaze, a City Council Public Safety committee heard reports from fire authorities that called for older high-rise buildings in the city to be retrofitted with fire sprinklers, but the cost property owners would face remains a major issue." Many of these older towers were built before sprinklers were mandated; last year, Long Beach Fire Dept. Capt. Jim Arvizu stated that more than half of city's high-rises lack sprinkler systems.
